Find Me in Kakuma is an interactive documentary, website and mobile search app. The project combines documentary storytelling with grassroots digital innovation in order to demand new attention for the ongoing migration crisis in Africa.

synopsis

Kakuma in Kenya is one of the biggest refugee camps in the Horn of Africa. Many children in the camp live without their parents. Phone numbers then remain the only fragile threads that connect them. But due to conflict situations, phone numbers quickly get lost and the children lose all contact with their families. Dot, Nyakong, Souade, Claude, Mitu, Amina and thousands of others are in search for their parents. But how do you that? And how do you fill the days, waiting for them? Last year, the teenagers of Kakuma helped to design an app to reconnect families. They spread the app over the camp and very quickly 3,000 children had signed up. When sharing their personal data in the app, these children all receive an avatar in this interactive documentary. Their avatars are placed on a map of Kakuma; every avatar represents a real person living in Kakuma.You are in Kakuma. Find the avatar of the 6 main characters among hundreds of others in the camp, and unlock their stories. You discover how Dot, Nyakong, Claude, Amina, Mitu and Souade live in the camp without their parents, why they had to flee South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Congo, and how they hope to find back their family. Combining documentary storytelling, gaming elements and the impact of digital innovation in refugee situations, Find Me in Kakuma wants to know if children and parents can be reunited? Find them in the camp and follow their search!
A Kakuma, l’un des plus grands camps de réfugiés dans la Corne de l’Afrique, nombreux sont les enfants et les jeunes adolescents qui ont perdu tout contact avec leurs parents à causes des conflits. Comment les retrouver ? Et comment tuer le temps, en attendant ? Find me in Kakuma souhaite nous faire prendre conscience, de manière créative et active, des conditions de vie de jeunes réfugiés non accompagnés sans les confiner dans un rôle de victimes.
Kakuma in Kenia is een van de grootste vluchtelingenkampen in de Hoorn van Afrika. Veel kinderen in het kamp wonen er zonder hun ouders. Telefoonnummers zijn het enige dat hen met hun ouders verbindt. Maar in conflictsituaties gaan telefoonnummers makkelijk verloren en de kinderen verliezen alle contact met hun familie. Dot, Nyakong, Souade, Claude, Mitu, Amina en duizenden anderen zijn op zoek naar hun ouders. Maar hoe kan je hen terugvinden? En hoe vul je je dagen terwijl je op hen wacht? Samen met zijn jonge vrienden in het kamp ontwikkelde filmmaker Lieven Corthouts een mobiele app die de zoektocht van de kinderen kan versnellen. Alle kinderen die zich inschreven op de app krijgen een avatar in de webdocumentaire. Door de combinatie van storytelling en real-time datavisualisatie, wil Find Me in Kakuma de onzichtbare realiteit van deze kinderen zichtbaar maken. En deze realiteit veranderen. Vinden de kinderen hun familie terug? Zoek hen in het kamp en volg hun verhaal!
