synopsis

Flavours of Iraq is the story of French-Iraqi journalist Feurat Alani. He talks with feeling about his Iraq, which is so much more than the Iraq we know from TV news, and where the little stories coexist with the big story. It is also the tragedy of a son born in France who retraces the footsteps of his father Amir to strengthen ties with his country of origin. Central to the film is Amir’s funeral ceremony, the fatiha, at which Feurat recalls intimate memories of his father. This is how he tells us Amir’s story, and the story of Iraq, which has barely known peace since its creation.
Le parfum d’Irak est le récit du journaliste franco-irakien Feurat Alani. Avec sensibilité, il raconte son Irak, qui est bien plus que celui que nous connaissons par les journaux télévisés, et où les petites histoires cohabitent avec la grande. C'est aussi la tragédie d'un fils né en France qui revient sur les traces de son père Amir pour resserrer les liens avec son pays d'origine. Au centre du film, la cérémonie funéraire, la fatiha, au cours de laquelle Feurat évoque des souvenirs intimes. C'est ainsi qu'il nous raconte l'histoire de son père et de l'Irak qui n'a guère connu la paix depuis sa création.
Le parfum d’Irak is het verhaal van de Frans-Iraakse journalist Feurat Alani. Met de nodige gevoeligheid vertelt hij over zijn Irak, dat zoveel meer is dan het Irak dat we kennen van de tv-journaals, en waar de kleine verhalen naast het grote verhaal bestaan. Het is ook de tragedie van een zoon die in Frankrijk geboren is en terugkeert in de voetsporen van zijn vader Amir om de banden met zijn land van herkomst aan te halen. Centraal in de film staat zijn begrafenisceremonie, de fatiha, waarop Feurat intieme herinneringen ophaalt. Zo vertelt hij ons het verhaal van zijn vader en van Irak dat sinds zijn oprichting amper vrede heeft gekend.
