synopsis

An essayistic nature documentary mapping out the relationships between honey bees, people and their environment. A bee colony collects stories about the surrounding landscape and plays a mythological role, too. Today, beekeepers from all over America take their bees to California where bees are deployed as seasonal workers to pollinate the crops. In a world in which seasons and regions become interchangeable, Globes focuses on the encounters with people who have an intimate bond with bees.
Globes commence dans une ruche, qui compte généralement autant d’habitants qu’une petite ville. Les abeilles ont développé un langage pour communiquer entre elles à propos du paysage autour de la ruche. Par des danses, elles expriment où trouver des fleurs. La Slovénie compte une longue tradition d'apiculteurs, et les abeilles sont au centre de la culture folklorique. Jusqu'il y a une centaine d'années, les ruches y voyageaient sur le dos de l'apiculteur vers de nouveaux paysages. Aujourd'hui, des milliards d'abeilles sont expédiées par camions pour polliniser les monocultures de Californie. Deze essayistische natuurdocumentaire brengt de relaties tussen mensen, honingbijen en hun omgeving in kaart. Met een vergrootglas toont Nina de Vroome hoe een bij zich uit een minuscuul ei ontwikkelt en de wereld invliegt. De bij verzamelt nectar uit bloemen en vertelt erover aan andere bijen. Zo verzamelt een bijenkolonie verhalen over het landschap rondom. Bijen spelen ook een mythologische rol. In de Sloveense folklore werden bijenkasten bijvoorbeeld beschilderd met fabeltaferelen. Vandaag reizen imkers uit heel Amerika met hun bijen naar Californië. Aangezien wilde insecten niet kunnen overleven in een monocultuur, worden bijen als seizoenarbeiders ingezet om de gewassen te bestuiven. In een wereldeconomie waarin jaargetijden en contreien inwisselbaar zijn, dreigt de wereld rondom een bijenkast een egaal decor te worden. Aan de hand van ontmoetingen met mensen die een intieme band hebben met bijen, vertelt Globes een verhaal over de wereld waarin het allerkleinste steeds in relatie staat tot het allergrootste.
