synopsis

The setting of the dramatic events is Liliane and Leonard's 'castle'. On the eve of the departure of their disabled daughter Lena for a sanatorium in Switzerland, this is the last chance for the company to spend an evening together. The 'castle', a grand mansion set in the woods, is managed by the gentle but firm 'matriarch' of the group, Liliane. Over the years, the mansion has become the meeting place for a group of friends who have become part of the family: Harry, Lena's husband, Ushi, the family lawyer, Afang, Xiang and little Jai, the Chinese family who make up the domestic staff, and Eddy and his new girlfriend Pol. The goldfish game of the title is a tradition of their own invention. It has become the playful and nearly childlike expression of their companionship and friendship: they all stand around the pool, waiting for the starting shot, at which they take their clothes off as fast as they can and jump into the water. The aim is to be the first to come up with the golden figurine of a fish that lies at the bottom of the pool. Even Mike, the local policeman and friend of the family, enjoys taking part in this compelling group ritual. But exactly at the moment when the group affirms itself in the game, disaster is announced in the form of David, a detective whom Mike has introduced to the company in good faith. The arrival of David, the outsider, poses a threat to the identity of the group.
Le château Liliane et de Léonard est le théâtre des événements dramatiques qui vont s'y dérouler. La veille du départ de Lena, leur fille handicapée, pour un sanatorium en Suisse, est la dernière occasion pour la compagnie de passer une soirée ensemble. Le château, un grand manoir dans les bois est dirigé par la gentille mais ferme « matriarche » du groupe, Liliane. Avec les années, le manoir est devenu le lieu de rassemblement pour un groupe d'amis qui sont devenus partie intégrante de la famille : Harry, le mari de Lena, Ushi, l'avocat de famille, Afang, Xiang et le petit Jai, la famille chinoise qui compose l'équipe domestique et Eddy et sa nouvelle petite amie Pol. « Le jeu du poisson en or » dont il est question dans le titre est une tradition de leur propre invention. C'est devenu l'expression taquine et pratiquement enfantine de leur compagnie et de leur amitié : ils sont tous debout autour de la piscine attendant le coup du départ, auquel ils enlèvent le plus rapidement leurs vêtements pour sauter dans l'eau. L'objectif est d'être le premier à remonter avec la figurine en or d'un poisson qui se trouve au fond de la piscine. Même Mike, le policier local et ami de la famille, s'amuse à prendre part au rituel irrésistible. Mais au moment même où le groupe s'affirme dans le jeu, un désastre s'annonce sous la forme de David, un détective que Mike a introduit en toute bonne foi dans la compagnie. L'arrivée de David, l'étranger, représente une menace pour l'identité du groupe.
