synopsis

Henri and the Islands is a short film about Herstappe, the smallest village in Belgium, situated right on the linguistic border between the French and the Dutch-speaking communities. People there speak both languages and there are no community-related problems. Herstappe, however, has its own problems. The residents have (for a bizarre reason) stopped coming together and talking. Through the eyes of the youngest villager, we get to know the people and the intricacies of this microcosmos. The key to a brighter future seems to lie in the innocent hands of our guide, the naïve Henri, who simply rides his bike from door to door.
Henri and the Islands est un court métrage à propos de Herstappe, le plus petit village de Belgique, situé juste à la frontière entre la communauté française et la communauté flamande. Les habitants y parlent les deux langues et il n’y a pas de problème communautaire. Herstappe a cependant ses propres problèmes à résoudre. Les habitants ont (pour d’étranges raisons) arrêté d’aller les uns vers les autres et de se parler. A travers les yeux du plus jeune habitant et de sa propre vision des choses, nous apprenons à connaître ces gens et les sensibilités de cet étrange microcosme. Alors que les autorités locales s’occupent de problèmes apparemment sans importance, les clés pour un meilleur futur sont entre les mains d’Henri, notre guide innocent. Un enfant qui ne connaît rien de ces disputes et dont la naïveté enfantine le conduit en vélo de porte à porte.
