synopsis

A Latvian hospital: a place where life usually begins and ends. We get to know its patients, medical personnel, layout and infrastructure as well as its atmosphere, heavily influenced by the hospital sounds and colours. The portrait of a hospital is intimate and familiar, but at the same time mysterious.
C’est généralement là que la vie commence et se termine. Nous pouvons jeter un coup d’oeil sur toutes les étapes de la vie dans cet hôpital letton. Nous apprenons à connaître ses patients, son personnel médical, la disposition des pièces et l’infrastructure tout comme l’atmosphère qui y règne, fortement influencée par les bruits et les couleurs de l’hôpital. Un lieu de rencontre de personnes issues de différentes classes sociales. Des amitiés s’y créent et des adieux douloureux s’y produisent. Cette image d’un grand hôpital nous semble intime et familière, tout en essayant de capter le mystère de ce lieu.
Het ziekenhuis van Liepaja in Letland heeft 12 etages. Iedere etage kent zijn eigen specialiteit. Van traumatologie tot drugsverslaafden, van kraamafdeling tot de sociale afdeling waar de hopeloze ouderen hun laatste dagen slijten. Een reis door het menselijke leven aan de hand van de verschillende etages. En raamvertelling in zeven etappes, zoals Shakespeare deze rangschikte in zijn '7 stages of man'. Zeven etappes die het gebied bestrijken van het uiterste begin van een mens, tot de laatste adem.
