The film It Rains Differently is a portrait of a forest as a fictional character. It is a meditation on collective labor and imagination, manifesting in the form of a forest that is perpetually in the making - and that, precisely through this ongoing process, manages to endure all transformations. The forest as a transnational, political, social, and cultural collective entity. The forest emerged on the Pešter karst plateau in southwestern Serbia, not far from the border with Kosovo. Every summer between 1978 and 1988, thousands of young people from across the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia volunteered for a reforestation project led by the filmmaker’s father, a forestry engineer. The work was organized through ORA, which brought together new generations in the spirit of Brotherhood and Unity. Forty years later, 150,000 hectares of mature forest dominate the landscape - despite all the societal shifts that followed: the collapse of the country, wars, privatizations, ecocides. Despite all the secrets buried within it (the Forest). It Rains Differently moves away from the symbolic realm and brings a new forest into being during the making of the film itself. It is composed of fictional, archival, and documentary footage, blurring the lines between these cinematic languages. The film’s production method mirrors the spirit of the earlier reforestation: in summer, volunteers once again gather on the Pešter plateau - but this time, not only to plant a new forest, but also to take part in the collective making of the film.
In It Rains Differently speelt een woud in een landelijke uithoek van Servië de hoofdrol. Zij, het woud, werd van 1973 tot 1988 geplant door ORA, een door de staat gestuurde organisatie voor vrijwilligerswerk voor jongeren. De film herensceneert de activiteiten uit die periode. Het herplanten wordt opgezet als performance maar ook als ‘shoot’ van de film. De mensen die zaaien zullen namelijk ook filmen.
