It's a race against time as the Russians are forced to choose between national pride and saving the lives of their countrymen when a test torpedo explodes, sinking a nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine to the bottom of the ocean.

synopsis

The Russian crew of a nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine, the K-141 Kursk, is participating in a naval exercise when an old test torpedo explodes, sinking the sub to the bottom of the ocean. With the front half of the sub destroyed and the majority of the crew killed, Dimitri Kolesnikov and the remaining men in the back of the Kursk are forced to try and survive on their own until the Russian Navy sends help. Even though the Russian government's rescue attempts are failing due to inadequate technology, the bureaucrats at the top still refuse to accept the help of the American, British, and Norwegian navies. It's a race against time as the Russians are forced to choose between national pride and saving the lives of their countrymen.
Le film raconte la tragique fin du Kursk, le fleuron des sous-marins russes à propulsion nucléaire, et de son équipage dont les 140 membres périront. Alors que le Kursk participe à un exercice naval en mer de Barents, une surchauffe dans le compartiment des torpilles provoque l’explosion de l’une d’entre elles. La partie frontale du Kursk est détruit et le bâtiment devenu incontrôlable, coule au fond de la mer de Barents. Par miracle, un petit groupe de marins a réussi à se réfugier dans le dernier compartiment à l’arrière du sous-marin. En tout Huit hommes avec à leur tête Dimitri Kolesnikov. Ils ne survivent dans le compartiment progressivement envahi par l’eau que dans l’espoir que la Marine Russe les secoure.
De film vertelt het verhaal van de ramp met de K-141 Kursk-onderzeeër in 2000, waarbij 118 Russische zeelieden stierven. Tijdens een Russische vlootoefening in de Barentszzee zinkt de onderzeeër na enkele explosies. 23 bemanningsleden overleven de ramp en wachten wanhopig op hulp, terwijl hun zuurstof op dreigt te raken. Ondertussen vechten familieleden wanhopig tegen politieke obstakels en onmogelijke kansen om hen te redden.
