A documentary that takes us inside La Petite Ecole, a school where children are children first, and pupils later.

synopsis

Marie and Juliette leave their teaching jobs to open La Petite Ecole in the heart of Brussels, a place where children, without previous schooling and often living in exile, are welcomed. Setting aside formal learning, the pair offer time and space for the children to be children again, before they face the demands of school. The film follows their efforts and their research, forcing us to see the school system as a possible perpetuator of the oppression that affects us all.
Marie et Juliette ont quitté l’enseignement classique pour ouvrir au cœur de Bruxelles une école où elles accueillent des enfants sans passé scolaire, souvent issus de l’exil. Elles leur offrent un lieu et un temps hors des apprentissages scolaires formels pour être ou redevenir des enfants, avant d’affronter l’institution scolaire qui attendra d’eux d’être des élèves. Au fil des tentatives de Juliette et Marie, et de leurs réflexions pédagogiques, le film nous oblige à questionner l’école comme un lieu vecteur de rapports d’oppression qui nous touchent toutes et tous.
Marie en Juliette hebben het klassieke onderwijssysteem verlaten om in het hartje van Brussel een school te openen waar ze kinderen, vaak op de vlucht en zonder schoolse achtergrond, opvangen. Ze bieden hen de ruimte en de tijd om weer kind te zijn of te worden voordat zij geconfronteerd worden met de schoolinstelling die van hen zal verwachten dat zij leerlingen zijn. De film toont ons hun pogingen en pedagogische reflecties en dwingt ons daardoor het schoolsysteem te zien als een mogelijke oorzaak van onderdrukking die ons allen aangaat.
