Les Misérables is Victor Hugo's masterpiece and one of the most beloved books of all time. Now, in a thrilling and heart-rending miniseries from writer Andrew Davies (War and Peace), it will come alive for a new generation. It is the story of France after the Revolution, where for ordinary people - 'les misérables' - the struggle to survive in a world of poverty and crime is all that counts. But for Jean Valjean, the convict who fatefully breaks his parole, it is a desperate struggle over many years to escape the relentless pursuit of the police inspector Javert.
Les Misérables, dat sinds zijn publicatie in 1862 nog niets aan kracht heeft ingeboet, is een hulde aan de strijd van het volk, de geest van menslievendheid en de verlossende kracht van de liefde tegenover een brutale, onverschillige en verdeelde samenleving.
