synopsis

Ming of Harlem: Twenty One Storeys in the Air is an only-in-New-York account of Ming, Al and Antoine Yates, who co-habited in a high-rise social housing apartment at the Drew-Hamilton complex in Harlem for several years until 2003, when news of their dwelling caused a public outcry and collective outpouring of disbelief. On the discovery that Ming was a 500-pound tiger and Al a seven-foot alligator, their story took on an astonishing dimension. The film frames Yates's recollections with a poetic study of Ming and Al, the predators' presence combined with a text by philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, reimagining the circumstances of the wild inside, animal names, strange territories and human/animal relations.
Ming is een tijger, Al een alligator. Hoog in het appartement van Antoine Yates in Harlem brachten ze samen enkele jaren door. Uit deze echte, maar onwaarschijnlijke situatie haalt Phillip Warnell het materiaal voor zijn nieuwe film: getuigenissen van Yates, maar ook de politie-opnames van hun ontdekking. Warnell onderzoekt deze bijzondere ervaring en voegt er eigen ingrediënten aan toe. Hij confronteert het verhaal met nieuwe inzichten van filosoof Jean-Luc Nancy, op wie hij reeds een beroep deed voor Outlandish, terwijl zich voor onze ogen een nauwgezette reconstructie afspeelt van het samenwonen in het appartement van Yates. De dubbelgangers van het roofdier en het reptiel zijn onwaarschijnlijke helden. We zien ze wandelen van de keuken naar het bed, van de badkamer naar het terras, geijsbeer dat verbijsterende proporties aanneemt. De langzame verplaatsingen, tussen het gebrul door, maken de ruimte vreemd. Deze heen-en-weerbeweging illustreert op poëtische wijze onze relatie ten aanzien van het dierlijke.
