What is it that makes Kurds such a fierce, dedicated and dependable power? Is this just a fight for independence? Or is something much more profound at stake? This documentary explores the motivation behind the conflict in Kurdistan.

synopsis

In a region where mountains sternly dominate the skyline, stretched across the man-made borders of Iraq, Syria and Turkey, lies Kurdistan: the region that the Kurdish people call home. It's not uncommon for journalists and news teams to show footage of Kurdish warriors in the ongoing battle against IS. These warriors of the PKK seem to be the only armed forces with boots on the ground able to push back the IS troops. Reports make us understand against whom they wage war, however we rarely hear what goals they're fighting for. What is it that make these Kurds such a fierce, dedicated and dependable power? Is this just a fight for independence? Or is something much more profound at stake?
In het bergachtige landschap dat zich uitstrekt over de grenzen van Irak, Syrie_ en Turkije ligt Koerdistan: de streek waar van oudsher de verschillende Koerdische volkeren wonen. In de aanhoudende strijd tegen IS zien we regelmatig beelden van de Koerdische strijders van de PKK. Zij lijken de enige strijdmacht die stelselmatig terrein blijft winnen op de troepen van IS. Tegen wie en tegen wat ze strijden, wordt ons vaak duidelijk gemaakt via verschillende mediakanalen. Maar zelden krijgen we te horen waarvoor deze Koerden hun leven geven. Op zoek naar antwoorden trok Jozef Devillé met een kleine ploeg naar Qandil, de grensstreek tussen Turkije en Irak. Hij ontdekte er een bezield volk met een een missie in een wonderlijk landschap. Omringd door machthebbers die hun liever arm dan rijk zijn, is er voor deze strijders geen betere vriend dan het berglandschap waarin ze leven.l
