An investigation of the Russian-Norwegian borderland, combining travelogue, anthropological inquiry and retro-futuristic sci-fi. An investigation whose motive is never quite revealed.

synopsis

Northern Drift is set in the wilderness of the Russian-Norwegian borderland, in Europe's far north. Home to the indigenous Sami culture, the frontier area first saw industrial development in the late 19th century, and the landscape still bears visible traces of 20th century conflicts. Now it is the focus of a northward expansion, fuelled by the sense that climate change will make the north an untapped economic goldmine.
Als resultaat van langdurig onderzoek, uitgevoerd onder het juk van de protocollen en restricties rond een met conflict beladen grens, in het Europese Hoge Noorden, neemt Northern Drift de vorm van een enquête waarvan het motief verborgen blijft. in een regio die sporen draagt van de conflicten van de vorige eeuw, spiegelt zich thans door klimaatsveranderingen een economische goudmijn voor. De film is tegelijk een reisverhaal, een antropologisch document en een retrofuturistische sciencefictionfilm, die deze genres vermengt tot een ingebeelde geografie. De gefragmenteerde en subjectieve verkenning ervan roept een labyrintische zone op waar verleden en toekomst door elkaar lopen.
