A documentary about the Wayana people, whose homeland is split between independent Suriname and French Guiana.

In the north of the Amazon rainforest, the Lawa River flows through the territory of the indigenous Wayana people. On both sides of the river, they are threatened by the rise of illegal gold mining, which poisons the entire region with mercury. As a result, this ancient habitat is overrun by intruders, who the Wayanas call “Parasisi”. The Wayanas guide us through their reality, revealing their silent struggle for self-determination, fundamental rights, identity, security, and health.
Op de grens van Suriname en Frans-Guyana stroomt de Lawa-rivier door het Wayana-leefgebied, een regio met een rijke geschiedenis, lang voordat er politieke grenzen waren getrokken. De blijvende verbondenheid van de Wayana’s met de rivier heeft hen generaties lang in leven gehouden. Terwijl Suriname zich onttrok aan de Nederlandse koloniale overheersing en onafhankelijk werd, is Frans-Guyana nog steeds Europees grondgebied. Deze unieke geopolitieke situatie maakt het thuisland van de Wayana's tot een mondiaal brandpunt, waar oude tradities botsen met moderne dilemma's.
