How to survive the dark Finnish winter? In Prisoners of the Ground, Stella van Voorst van Beest takes us on a journey through Finland to the rhythm of the Finnish tango. In karaoke bars and dance halls, we meet people from all walks of life and get to know their stories of nostalgia and melancholy. To get through this long, cold and dark season they dream of 'the happy land' as featured in the popular tango song 'Satumaa'. While they find solace in tango, the snow outside slowly starts to melt. But when the sun finally breaks through, will these prisoners of the ground be able to reach the happy place they dream about?
Comment survivre au rude hiver finlandais ? Dans le film Prisoners of the Ground, Stella van Voorst van Beest nous entraîne dans un voyage à travers la Finlande au rythme du tango finlandais. Dans des bars à karaoké et des dancings, nous rencontrons des personnes de différents horizons et apprenons des histoires pleines de nostalgie et de mélancolie sur leur vie. Pour passer à travers cette longue, froide et sombre saison, ils rêvent du « pays joyeux » décrit dans la chanson de tango populaire Satumaa. Alors qu’ils trouvent du soleil dans le tango, la neige à l’extérieur fond peu à peu. Mais lorsque le soleil pointera finalement le bout de son nez, ces prisonniers du sol seront-ils capables d’atteindre le lieu dont ils rêvent?
