Between 1873 and 1934, the Belgian-American company Red Star Line shipped around two million migrants from Antwerp to New York. What makes the Red Star Line unique is that it mainly transported Eastern Europeans to the United States, many of whom were of Jewish origin.

synopsis

The documentary series presents a mosaic of human migration stories. Audiotapes containing over 2,000 interviews with people testifying about the most important and most difficult journey of their lives are kept on Ellis Island, just off the coast of New York, where migrants landed. We visit the descendants of these Red Star Line passengers in America, bringing with us the original sound recordings of stories told by their parents and grandparents. Together we discover why these people left everything they owned behind; how the RSL brought them across the ocean to New York; and how they tried to build a new life on the other side of the world.
De 1873 à 1934, la compagnie maritime belgo-américaine Red Star Line a transporté plus de 2 millions d’émigrants d’Anvers à New York. La majorité d’entre eux venaient d’Europe de l’Est. Beaucoup étaient d’origine juive. Avec la Red Star Line, Anvers est devenue l’un des ports de transit le plus important d’Europe vers l’Amérique.
La série documentaire Red Star Line livre une mosaïque de destinées humaines de ces hommes et ces femmes qui ont tout laissé derrière eux en quête du rêve américain. Grâce à leurs témoignages sonores émouvants et en compagnie de leurs descendants installés aux Etats-Unis, nous découvrons les raisons pour lesquelles ces Européens ont décidé de quitter le continent. Nous accompagnons leur voyage jusqu’à Anvers, leur traversée en bateau et le choc de l’arrivée en Amérique.
Tussen 1873 en 1934 vervoerde de legendarische Belgisch-Amerikaanse scheepvaartmaatschappij Red Star Line om en bij de 2 miljoen migranten van Antwerpen naar New York. Wat de Red Star Line uniek maakt is dat deze maatschappij tijdens haar rijke geschiedenis vooral Oost-Europeanen naar de Verenigde Staten vervoerde, waarvan velen van joodse origine waren. Hierdoor was Antwerpen in die dagen één van de belangrijkste passagiershaven van Europa.
De documentairereeks brengt een mozaïek van menselijke migratieverhalen. Op Ellis Island, het eiland voor New York waar destijds alle migranten aankwamen, worden audiotapes bewaard met meer dan 2000 interviews met mensen die getuigen over de belangrijkste reis van hun leven. Met deze originele geluidsopnames bezoeken we de nazaten in Amerika van deze Red Star Line-passagiers. Samen met hen ontdekken we waarom ze hun hebben en houden achterlieten, hoe ze naar Antwerpen reisden, hoe ze de overtocht beleefden aan boord van de Red Star Line, en hoe ze een nieuw leven probeerden op te bouwen aan de andere kant van de oceaan.
