A poet looks forward to the day a statue of Belgium’s colonial king, Leopold II, will be removed from a Brussels square.

In June 2020, thousands of people took to the streets in Brussels to raise their voices against police brutality and institutional racism, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. At a certain point, it seemed that some demonstrators would tear down the statue of Leopold II, Belgium’s colonial king, in a nearby square. The statue is still standing, for now, but poet Marie Paule Mugeni is already preparing her speech for the day it will be removed.
