He quickly discovers that this money can't make up for the brutal and revolting situations he now has to face. In the meantime, his fiancée Katrien tries to keep their little farm going by working 10 to 14 hours each day.

synopsis

1833 - Jan finds himself in the army after he agrees to take over another man's three-year service for a large sum of money. He quickly discovers that this money can't make up for the brutal and revolting situations he now has to face. In the meantime, his fiancée Katrien tries to keep their little farm going by working 10 to 14 hours each day. In the barracks, Jan's money is stolen and he is struck by blindness because of malnutrition and unhygienic circumstances. Katrien goes by coach to the barracks to bring Jan back home. Their way back becomes a long journey on foot during which Katrien is raped.
1833. Jean se retrouve embarqué dans l’armée après avoir accepté de reprendre le service de 3 ans d’un autre homme pour une grosse somme d’argent. Très vite, il se rend compte que cet argent ne vaut pas la situation brutale et révoltante à laquelle il doit désormais faire face. Entre-temps, Catherine, sa fiancée essaie de maintenir la survie leur petite ferme en travaillant 10 à 14 heures par jour. Dans les casernes, l’argent de Jean est volé et il est frappé de cécité à cause de la malnutrition et des conditions d’hygiène déplorables. Catherine se rend en carrosse aux casernes pour ramener Jean à la maison. Leur retour se transforme en un long voyage à pied au cours duquel Catherine est violée.
