The story behind the documentary The Land of the Enlightened is as fascinating as the film itself. Shooting over a period of seven years in the chaotic, dangerous and unpredictable war zone of Afghanistan was no easy task. This 'making of' shows that filmmaking is not only a skill but also an art in perseverance and flexibility.
Het verhaal achter de film The Land of the Enlightened is minstens zo fascinerend als de film zelf: filmen (op 16 mm dan nog) in het chaotische, gevaarlijke en onvoorspelbare oorlogsgebied Afghanistan is dan ook geen evidentie. In de zeven jaar dat regisseur Pieter-Jan De Pue en zijn crew aan de film werkten, werden ze geconfronteerd met legerprotocol, Talibanstrijders, budgetten die alsmaar overschreden werden en taal- en cultuurbarrières. De making of laat zien dat filmmaken niet alleen vakmanschap is, maar ook doorzettingsvermogen en flexibiliteit.
