• This is a story from the director's childhood - and his quest for his mum's love. Instead of choosing him and his little brother, she chose alcohol. The story takes place during the last summer with mum - the summer where everyone was confronted with the hard reality and nothing would ever be the same. The story is told through his 10-year-old eyes, utilising a combination of 8mm family archive, animation, old stills and footage to achieve an emotional coming of age journey as a grown up, Steffan's mother is dead and here the director confronts the bitterness and inner turmoil that still haunts him.

Un amour qu’il n’a jamais reçu, parce que sa mère a préféré l'alcool avant les soins pour lui et son petit frère. The Night Dad brought us Home décrit cette quête de l'amour et raconte son évasion comme un adulte, loin des souvenirs, loin de la haine et loin d’une réconciliation avec sa mère.
• Deze documentaire vertelt het persoonlijk verhaal van de regisseur Steffan Stranberg. Als kind was hij steeds op zoek naar de liefde van zijn moeder. Een liefde die hij nooit gekregen heeft, omdat zijn moeder alcohol verkoos boven de zorg voor hem en zijn jongere broer. The Night Dad Brought Us Home beschrijft deze zoektocht naar liefde en vormt daarnaast een verhaal over zijn ontsnapping als volwassene, weg van de herinneringen, weg van de haat en weg van een verzoening met zijn moeder.
  Door 8mm film vanuit zijn kindertijd te combineren met animatie, oude foto’s en hedendaags filmmateriaal verweeft hij zijn jeugdervaringen met zijn volwassen perspectieven. Het verhaal zal worden verteld als een soort ‘coming-of-age’-film. De voornaamste verhaallijn zal gaan over de laatste dramatische zomer bij de moeder en de gebeurtenissen in de aanloop naar een bepaalde, cruciale nacht. Na deze zomer en meer bepaald deze nacht werd iedereen op de proef gesteld. Niets niet zou nog hetzelfde zijn.
  Vandaag is Steffan volwassen, zijn moeder is dood en hij worstelt met de vraag: “Mama, haatte ik je echt? Of haatte ik enkel de persoon die jij werd als je gedronken had? Kan ik de echte jou nog terugvinden? En kan ik eindelijk, op een respectvolle manier, vertellen over de nacht dat papa ons mee naar huis nam?”
