synopsis

For 15 years, photographer Stephan Vanfleteren has tried to unlock the secrets of the North Sea. This documentary follows his journey as he gradually abandons the safety of the shore, immersing himself deeper into the water, literally and metaphorically. Haunted by a childhood trauma of nearly drowning, his quest becomes both artistic and personal. Along the way, he encounters strangers whose fleeting appearances reveal universal fears, desires and the looming weight of climate change. From storms and dense fog to glowing plankton and northern lights, the sea becomes a stage where Vanfleteren wrestles with beauty, danger and himself.
Depuis 15 ans, le photographe Stephan Vanfleteren tente de percer les mystères de la mer du Nord. Le documentaire retrace sa descente progressive dans les flots, quittant la sécurité du rivage pour se confronter à un ancien traumatisme d’enfance: sa quasi-noyade. Sa quête devient un dialogue entre art et peur intime. Sur sa route, il croise des figures éphémères dont les récits révèlent des conflits universels, amplifiés par la crise climatique. Tempêtes, brouillard, plancton lumineux et aurores boréales font de la mer une scène imprévisible où Vanfleteren cherche à défier le danger et à se comprendre.
Al 15 jaar probeert fotograaf Stephan Vanfleteren de geheimen van de Noordzee te ontrafelen. Deze documentaire volgt hoe hij steeds verder de zee in stapt, weg van de veiligheid van het strand. Een verdrongen trauma van bijna-verdrinking als kind drijft zijn zoektocht, die zowel artistiek als persoonlijk is. Onderweg ontmoet hij uiteenlopende passanten die elk hun verhaal en hun angsten meebrengen, terwijl ook de klimaatcrisis zich opdringt. Stormen, mist, zeevonk en noorderlicht maken de zee tot een onvoorspelbare arena waarin Vanfleteren strijdt met schoonheid, gevaar en zichzelf.
