When his son joins the labour movement, the weather-beaten, work-worn farmer Van Paemel is driven off his land by the local landowner and is forced to move into an impoverished hovel. Another son is wounded in a hunting accident and his daughter is made pregnant by one of the landowner's offsprings.

Lorsque son fils rejoint le parti travailliste, Van Paemel, un fermier hâlé et travailleur est exclu de ses terres par le propriétaire local et forcé d’emménager dans un taudis pour démunis.
