What Makes Us Boys is a poetic and intimate coming-of-age documentary that follows a teenager and his younger brother growing up in today’s digital world.

synopsis

What Makes Us Boys is an intimate coming-of-age portrait about growing up in today's digital world. Teenager Daan and his younger brother Sam both struggle: Daan with the connective tissue disease EDS and Sam with being born in a female body. When Daan starts high school, he shares videos on social media to cope with the loneliness that comes with his disease. At the same time the relationship with his brother changes as he finds himself increasingly alone in a world Sam isn’t part of.
De film vertelt het verhaal van de 14-jarige Daan en zijn jongere broertje Sam. De twee broers steunen elkaar in een snel veranderende wereld die het hen niet altijd even makkelijk maakt. Daan worstelt met de zeldzame bindweefselziekte EDS en zijn broertje Sam is geboren in een meisjeslichaam. Voor Daan is het maken van filmpjes die hij deelt op zijn YouTube-kanaal een creatieve uitlaatklep, een manier om de eenzaamheid tegen te gaan. Wanneer Daan naar de middelbare school gaat, staat alles op het punt te veranderen. Daans horizon wordt breder, maar hij wordt geconfronteerd met de fysieke limieten van zijn ziekte. Hij isoleert zich steeds meer in een wereld waar Sam geen deel van uitmaakt.
