synopsis

In a time in which the debt held by Western museums which have been financed by forced labour on confiscated land - the plantation - becomes ever more apparent, this documentary testifies to an unlikely new beginning. White Cube follows the Cercle d'Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC), a plantation workers' co-operative located on a former Unilever plantation in Lusanga, Democratic Republic of Congo. The film documents their success in ending the destructive system of monoculture on their lands.
Op een voormalige plantage van Unilever in Congo besluit een groep plantagearbeiders kunst te gaan maken. Met de opbrengsten kopen ze hun land terug, bouwen ze hun eigen museum en starten een bloeiende, inclusieve en ecologische plantage. Veel musea zijn gebouwd met winst onttrokken aan plantages. De film vertelt het verhaal van een onwaarschijnlijke poging de waardeketen van kunst te herstructureren.
