EN - Bahoz is 19 years old and lives surrounded by nature and beautiful landscapes. Every day, he goes to the mountains to hunt although he catches very little. But today will be the day that will change his life forever.

NL - Wanneer Bahoz, een jonge Iraakse man, terugkeert van de jacht, hoort hij gegil. In de struiken vergrijpt een man zich aan Nisrin, een jonge vrouw. Bahoz verjaagt de man met zijn geweer en probeert Nisrin te helpen zodat haar familie niets zou merken. Haar eer staat immers op het spel. Wanneer die avond de familie van Nisrin hem komt opzoeken, denkt Bahoz dat ze hem komen bedanken…

Sahim Omar Kalifa’s Bad Hunter shortlisted for Oscars

Bad Hunter, a short film by Belgian-Kurdish director Sahim Omar Kalifa, is one of 10 films shortlisted for the upcoming Oscars in the category of Best Live Action Short. The five nominees will be announced on January 14, and the awards ceremony is scheduled for February 28.

Bad HunterMembers of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose Bad Hunter out of 144 qualifying shorts. Sahim Omar Kalifa’s film tells the story of 19-year-old Bahoz. Cannes line-up reveals talent from Flanders

Copain selected for the Short Film Competition and the animated short film Paradise competing in the Cinéfondation section ensure Flanders’s presence at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Various other films in the Festival’s line-up also feature talent from Flanders, while several (co-)productions with Flanders fly the flag in the Marché du Film.

ParadiseInvited for the Festival’s Short Film Competition, Jan and Raf Roosens’s short film Copain is about Fré, a teenager trapped between his conservative, wealthy parents and his working-class friends. Paradise, by Laura Vandewynckel, tells a story about people heading for a better place on different sides of the ocean; the stop-motion film is set to première as part of the Cinéfondation.

Seven Flemish productions to screen at Athens, Ohio

The 42nd annual Athens International Film + Video Festival kicked off on April 3 with seven Flemish productions in its line-up. Selected films include Alidor Dolfing’s Wien for Life; A Handful by Katrien Vermeire; and Olivier Vanden Bussche’s animated short To Build a Fire.

Bad HunterAn Vrombaut, author of the successful British animated series 64 Zoo Lane, will be in Athens with The Tie. The short animation film tells the story of the chance meeting between a small giraffe and a tall one. Despite their obvious difference in stature, they discover a kinship.

Bad Hunter picks up fifth trophy

Sahim Omar Kalifa’s short film Bad Hunter has won the award for the Best International Short Film at the 31st International Love Film Festival in Mons, Belgium (20-27 February). The award marks the fifth international acknowledgement for Bad Hunter.

Bad HunterSince its release in August, Bad Hunter has picked up five awards. It premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival, where it won the Jury Award for Best Short Film. At the Valladolid International Film Festival it went on to pick up the Silver Spike, followed by the Jury Prize in Dubai and the Special Jury Award for best International Short at Australia’s Flickerfest.

Four out of five for Kalifa’s Bad Hunter

Sahim Omar Kalifa’s latest short film Bad Hunter has won the Special Jury Award for Best International Short at the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival in Sydney, Australia (9-18 January). Since its international premiere, Bad Hunter has screened at five international festivals and won awards at four of them.
