EN - Because of a dance competition, a young ballet dancer finds himself in a foreign place. Alone in his hotel room, loneliness overpowers him. But then he meets a stranger on the run.

NL - Miller is een jongen van 16 die voor een internationale danscompetitie in het buitenland vertoeft. Na de wedstrijd blijft hij alleen achter op zijn hotelkamer en ervaart hij de eenzaamheid gekoppeld aan zijn ambitie. Het duurt echter niet lang voor hij onverwachts bezoek krijgt. Jerome, op de vlucht voor de politie, zoekt een schuilplaats en vindt die bij de jonge Miller. Hun plotse ontmoeting duurt langer dan verwacht.

FR - A l’occasion d’une compétition de danse, un jeune danseur de ballet se trouve dans un pays étranger. Seul dans sa chambre d’hôtel, il se laisse emporter par la solitude, avant de rencontrer un inconnu en cavale.

The Match Factory acquires international sales rights for Girl

The Match Factory, the Cologne-based sales agent which also sold The Broken Circle Breakdown, has acquired worldwide sales rights to Lukas Dhont's debut feature Girl, it was announced by Screen International at the start of the Berlin International Film Festival.

Girl was developed in the framework of the Cinéfondation Résidence and won the Work in Progress Prize at both last year's CONNeXT and at the European Film Festival of Les Arcs. Screen International recently cited Dhont's debut feature one of the "hottest projects from the Benelux in 2018".

Lukas Dhont’s project Girl wins Work In Progress Award at Les Arcs

Girl, Lukas Dhont’s debut feature currently in post-production, has won the Titrafilm Work In Progress Award at this year’s Les Arcs European Film Festival. The Award comes with an EUR 10,000 post-production grant. In October, Dhont won the Grid VFX Works In Progress Award at this year’s edition of CONNeXT.

GirlGirl is the story of a 15-year-old girl born in a boy's body who is ready to risk everything to pursue her dream of becoming a ballerina. In Les Arcs, Dhont presented some excerpts from his film which is currently being edited.

Flemish shorts bonanza at Palm Springs ShortFest

Several short films from Flanders are selected for this year’s Palm Springs International Short Film Festival (18-24 June). The selectees will be screened in various different sections of the festival. Perfect Drug by Toon Aerts was chosen for the WTF? segment, while Lukas Dhont’s Headlong was picked for the Si C’est Bon programme. Hisko Hulsing’s Junkyard, a co-production with Flanders, made the call as part of the Crimes And Misdemeanours section. Finally, Double Room, Chopper and Marcel, King of Tervuren also add a touch of Flanders to the Palm Springs line-up.

Perfect DrugThe Palm Springs International ShortFest is one of the largest showcases of short films in North America, this year marking its 19th edition. The seven-day competitive festival screens approximately 300 films from 40 countries in a series of 90-minute programmes and has about twenty competitive categories awarding prize money.

Flemish five win in Brussels

Five Flemish shorts were awarded at the 16th edition of the Brussels Short Film Festival (24 April - 4May). Besides the National and International Competition, the festival added a third section this year, titled ‘Next Generation.’ This competition focused exclusively on (inter)national student short films.

hlIn the Next Generation competition, Lukas Dhondt’s Headlong (pictured on the left) grabbed the Grand Prix, worth €1,500, while Anthony Schatteman’s Kiss Me Softly was awarded the Prix National du Public.

Home game for Flemish directors in Ghent

Fien Troch’s latest feature film Kid received a Special Mention at the 39th Ghent Film Festival, while Name of the Fathers by Timothy Wennekes was awarded Best Belgian Student Short Film. In the same section, Lukas Dhondt’s Headlong (Corps Perdu) was acknowledged with an honorable mention. Earlier this week, Bullhead-DOP Nicolas Karakatsanis already won the Jo Röpcke Award in Ghent.

Fien Troch's KidThe fest’s International Jury lauded Troch for her authentic style of actors’ direction and her bold approach on the themes of family and childhood. American journalist and film critic Joan Dupont chaired the jury this year.
