EN - Jean-Pierre Bauwens Junior, a 23-year-old junior world champion in the lightweight category of boxing, has a very special family: he is the oldest of seven siblings, four of whom suffer from autism. Junior doesn’t just fight for pride or glory, he is fighting for a better future for his family. But then tragedy strikes: one of his autistic brothers accidentally kills his father.

Il est le frère aîné d’une fratrie de sept enfants, dont quatre souffrent d’autisme. Junior ne combat pas seulement pour le succès et pour la gloire, il combat pour promettre un meilleur avenir à sa famille qui est pauvre. En se frayant un chemin vers le sommet, il a comme objectif d’acheter une plus grande maison pour sa famille. Mais un tragique accident se produit : l’un des frères autistes de Junior tue leur père par accident. Le film représente le choc entre une famille aimante et une réalité cruelle.

JUNIOR and The Circle join Hot Docs line-up

Sien Versteyhe’s JUNIOR and Bram Conjaert’s VAF Wildcard film The Circle have been selected for the 20th edition of Hot Docs, the Canadian International Documentary Festival (25 April-5 May). Both medium-length films are screening in the fest’s International Spectrum category, making them eligible for the Award for Best Mid-Length Documentary, as well as the Audience Award. The Only Son, a minor co-production with Flanders, is selected for the World Showcase section. Along with IDFA, Hot Docs is one of the world’s foremost documentary film festivals.

Sien Versteyhe's JUNIORJUNIOR is premiering internationally at Hot Docs after a work-in-progress of the film had screened at the Belgian Docville fest, receiving a Special Mention from the International Jury. Bram Conjaerts’ The Circle was also added to the fest’s Official Selection and is to receive its world premiere in Toronto.

A Flemish touch to Belgian festival bills

This week, the Open Doek Festival (20 – 29 April) kicked off in Turnhout, while Leuven is getting ready for the 8th edition of the International Documentary Festival DOCVILLE (27 April – 5 May). Both programs house a large selection of Flemish titles, ranging from Daniel Lambo’s Dry Branches of Iran to Berlinale attendees Anton Corbijn Inside Out andAsparragos.

Christoph Bohn's The Boy is GoneFor the eighth consecutive year, DOCVILLE highlights the best documentaries and awards prizes in various sections. This year, Flanders is well represented in its national competition with more than ten short and feature-length film titles.
