A Forest Darkly is about a nostalgic longing for lost love and time. The film focuses on two very different kinds of love in one's life: maternal and erotic.

Julian is heartbroken and depressed. His subconscious self comes to his aid and tries to lift him out of his despair by showing Julian a chamber of six mirrors through which he can travel to revisit memories. A flow of recollections ensues about his relationship with his girlfriend and childhood memories with his mother and father. Roaming through the forest of his thoughts, these memories reveal a truth that Julian tries to block out.
Julian verkeert in een depressieve roes terwijl zijn onderbewustzijn hem daar probeert uit te halen. Het onderbewustzijn is heer en meester van een spiegelkamer waar we doorheen spiegels kunnen reizen om herinneringen te herbeleven. Julian denkt zo terug aan zijn jeugd, momenten met zijn ouders en de relatie met zijn vriendin. Hij dwaalt door het bos van zijn geheugen en vindt daar dingen terug die hij vergeten was.
Une forêt obscure gaat over een nostalgisch verlangen naar verloren liefde en tijd. De film focust op het geconcentreerd kijken naar de vrouwen in zijn leven en op de twee heel verschillende liefdes die Julian ervaart, namelijk de moederlijke en de erotische liefde. Het is een poëtisch gedicht over de liefde voor de vrouw.
