synopsis

Julius Caesar reveals his new plan to deal with those fierce Gauls once and for all. As the last 'resistors against the Roman occupier' didn't give in to the force of the Roman army, he now comes up with a peaceful invasion: he will bring civilisation to the gates of the village! Caesar decides to build a new city, the Mansion of the Gods, which will encroach on the village of Asterix and will force the Gauls to either integrate or move away. In the meantime, things in Rome don't go too well for the divine Caesar as the Romans don't want to leave the city and move to the Mansion of the Gods. That's why Caesar, advised by senator Prospectus, launches a big promotional campaign at Circus Maximus.
Julius Caesar onthult zijn nieuw plan om eens en voor altijd af te rekenen met de onverzettelijke Galliërs. Aangezien de laatste ‘verzetsstrijders tegen de Romeinse bezetter’ niet zijn gezwicht voor de kracht van het Romeinse leger, denkt hij nu aan een vreedzame invasie, die echter veel meer kwaad dan goed zal doen: de komst van de beschaving aan de poorten van het dorp! Caesar beslist dus om een nieuwe stad te bouwen, de Romeinse Lusthof, die het dorp van Asterix zal insluiten en de Galliërs zal dwingen om zich te integreren of op te krassen. Hij belast de architect Campus met deze opdracht. Asterix en Obelix grijpen snel in en verhinderen dat Campus zijn gang gaat in het Gallische bos; maar de architect, onder de hoede van de centurio Calenetus, werkt 's nachts om de bomen te rooien en de bouwwerf voor te bereiden. Dat is niet gerekend op de gespierde tussenkomst van Obelix die de gerooide bomen opnieuw plant, en op Panoramix die tovereikels zaait waar onmiddellijk eeuwenoude eiken uit groeien. In Rome ondertussen verlopen de zaken niet zoals voorzien voor de goddelijke Caesar. De Romeinen zijn niet geneigd om Rome te verlaten en naar de Romeinse Lusthof te verhuizen. Daarom lanceert Caesar, op advies van senator Prospectus, een grote promotiecampagne in het Circus Maximus. Petiminus, een bescheiden timmerman, wint tijdens een loterij na het gladiatorengevecht een appartement in de Romeinse Lusthof.
