Lina, a young woman living in Dong Bei with her husband and son, leaves China to make money in Paris. But things do not go as planned...

synopsis

Lina is an aspiring young woman, happily married and mother to a 10-year-old boy. However she senses that the world around her is collapsing. It's the end of the 20th century, Dong Bei, a former prosperous industrial area can't seem to adjust to China's mutation. Lina wants to fit into this emerging society, furthermore she wants a brilliant future for her son. Lina leaves for Paris hoping to quickly gather up funds to come back to Banxi. But over there nothing goes as planned and like the women who left before her, Lina hides the "shameful" reality of her life in France from her loved ones. Her lie won't be without consequences and Lina will acknowledge that some things are priceless.
Lina est une jeune femme ambitieuse, mariée à un homme aimant et mère d’un petit garçon de dix ans. Pourtant, elle sent le monde autour d’elle s’écrouler. En cette fin de 20ème siècle, le Dong Bei région industrielle originellement prospère paie un lourd tribut à la mutation de la Chine. Lina veut une place dans cette société émergente et surtout un avenir brillant pour son fils. Lina part à Paris, espérant revenir rapidement avec des fonds. Mais rien ne se passe comme prévu et comme les femmes parties avant elle, Lina cache à ses proches la réalité « honteuse » de sa vie en France. Son mensonge ne sera pas sans conséquences et Lina apprendra que certaines choses n’ont pas de prix.
Lina verlaat haar gezin in China om in Europa te gaan werken, in de hoop dat zij met voldoende kapitaal zal terugkeren om haar welvaartsdroom waar te maken. Wanneer ze beseft dat de vrouwen die haar voorgingen het zo gewaardeerde geld in de prostitutie verdienen staat ze voor een onmogelijke uitdaging. Terugkeren naar China kan niet, gezichtsverlies is een groot taboe. Uiteindelijk vervoegt zij hun gelederen en zet zichzelf daardoor gevangen in een wereld van leugens, terwijl haar man haar succes bejubelt. Tot de waarheid uitbreekt.
