An exploration of two separate historical events: Germany's invasion of Belgium and Belgium's colonisation of the Congo.

synopsis

Bully Beef is an attempt to reconnect two histories that continue to be set apart: the invasion of Belgium by Germany in 1914 and the colonisation by Belgium of the Congo some 40 years earlier. One event is considered part of 'European' history and taught in schools and universities; the other part of 'colonial' history - set somewhere lower down the hierarchical ladder and hardly touched upon in the school curriculum.
Bully Beef aborde les thèmes de l’amnésie sélective et du manque d’empathie. La statue de General Jules Jacques, héro de la Première Guerre mondiale et agent colonial dans le Congo de Léopold II, est le motif central du film. Trônant sur le marché de Diksmuide, la statue représente le lien entre deux événements impérialistes – La Première Guerre mondiale et la colonisation du Congo. Bully Beef examine les différences des souvenirs publiques de la Belgique entre la colonisation et le fait d’être colonisé. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’un sujet sérieux, l’approche visuelle du film est expressive, en utilisant l’humour noir accompagné d’un esprit léger.
