synopsis

Starting with an apparently trivial security check at Tel Aviv airport, By The Throat goes on to explore a more deeply engrained border, albeit an invisible one, a border that marks our oral cavity and defines the sounds and words we can pronounce. We carry these limits, created by our mother-tongue, with us. We become mobile check-points, wherever we are. Combining filmed testimony, found footage, YouTube clips and medical imagery, the film moves through sonic, anatomical and political territory, and explores how language and pronunciation are used to define, categorise and control.
Prenant pour point de départ un contrôle de sécurité à l'aéroport de Tel-Aviv, By The Throat explore une frontière plus profondément marquée, bien qu'invisible, qui détermine les sons et les mots que nous prononçons. Nous transportons avec nous cette limite, créée par notre langue maternelle, devenant nous-mêmes des checkpoints mobiles, où que nous soyons.
Een security check op de luchthaven van Tel Aviv geeft aanleiding tot een audiovisuele zoektocht naar een diep ingeslepen, zij het onzichtbare grens, die onze uitspraak bepaalt. Het is een beperking die een ieder van ons in zich draagt. Verborgen in onze moedertaal, maakt ze van ons een mobiel check-point, waar we ons ook bevinden.
