Over a period of a decade, two Iraqi friends – one a filmmaker, the other a dancer – reach a new understanding of what it means to live as artists in exile.

synopsis

Dance with a Bullet is a documentary that tells the intertwined stories of Iraqi dancer Anmar Taha and his friend, the filmmaker Dhyaa Joda. After the US-led invasion of Iraq, when hope for a freer future began to disintegrate in the face of sectarian violence and chaos, the two friends fled Baghdad and headed for Europe, where they have remained living in exile ever since. Through the stories of these two artists, who struggle to find their place as immigrants abroad, the film reveals how the cultural activity of Iraqi artists both inside and outside of Iraq has become increasingly vital in the last decade.
Dance with a Bullet is een documentaire die gedurende 10 jaar het sterk verweven verhaal van de Iraakse danser Anmar Taha en de filmmaker Dhyaa Joda volgt. Na de Amerikaanse invasie van Irak, wanneer de hoop op een vrijere toekomst afbrokkelde door de dagelijkse confrontatie met sectair geweld en chaos, vluchtten de twee vrienden uit Bagdad en kwamen naar Europa. Doorheen de verhalen van deze twee artiesten, die worstelen om hun plek als immigranten te vinden, toont de film hoe de culturele activiteit van Iraakse artiesten zowel binnen als buiten Irak steeds meer vitaal werd in de laatste 10 jaar, om nieuwe dilemma’s te kunnen aangaan vermits de samenleving verdeeld is en het land afbrokkelt.
