Sarah Vanagt asks children to read the future in the elusive imprints of their city. Onto countless abstract patterns, brought to life with the help of an old magic lantern, children from Brussels, Athens and Sarajevo project their own impressions, dreams and fears.

synopsis

What kind of futures can be read in the impersonal fragments of our reality? Fifteen years after her first film and many transformations later, Sarah Vanagt decided to reverse the question and ask children to read the future in the elusive imprints of their city. Onto countless abstract patterns, brought to life with the help of an old magic lantern, children from Brussels, Athens and Sarajevo project their own impressions, dreams and fears. The result is a form of 'magical reading', as the perception of unforeseen correspondences and constellations that confront us with the undercurrent of the present.
Des enfants de Bruxelles, d’Athènes et de Sarajevo déploient des bandes transparentes de rubans adhésifs dans les rues où ils grandissent. Lorsqu’ils les enlèvent, une sorte d’empreinte de la ville se dessine : poussière, sable, emballages de bonbons, insectes, verre, peluche... Un journal ultra-réaliste qui s’anime à travers une vieille lanterne magique. Toutes ces formes et ces images nous renseignent-elles déjà sur l’avenir ?
Kinderen uit Brussel, Athene en Sarajevo rollen transparante stroken tape uit in de straten waar ze opgroeien. Wanneer ze die lostrekken, komt een afdruk van de stad mee: stof, zand, snoepwikkels, insecten, glas, een pluisje… Een ultra-realistisch dagboek dat via een oude toverlantaarn tot leven komt. Vertellen al die vormen en beelden ons al iets over de toekomst?
Sarah Vanagt studeerde eerst geschiedenis in Antwerpen, Sussex en Groningen en vervolgens film aan de National Film and Television School in Londen. In haar documentaires en video-installaties probeert ze met poëzie en verbeeldingskracht steeds om de geschiedenis aan te raken. Kwesties zoals hoe we (sporen van) het verleden verwerken, hoe we die in beeld brengen en hoe we omgaan met ons collectieve geheugen worden tastbaar. Voelbaar.
