• In the 17th century, Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek, a draper from Delft, begins to make glass lenses, in order better to study the quality of his cloth. He melts, drips and grinds small beads of glass. His tiny lenses are so bright and have such magnifying power that the draper seems to have entered a new dimension. Is he the first to see little moving 'animals' in a drop of water? How to describe something that nobody ever saw before? In the film Every Tear, Sarah Vanagt starts a journey into her home city of Brussels, with Leeuwenhoek's microscope in hand. She picks up bits and pieces on her road and tries to find out what the first microscopic images may have looked like. She replaces the lens of her camera with the 17th-century lens. As she is filming, she wonders why we always look for shapes that we already know, when we are in the eye of the unknown.
• Au 17e siècle, Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek, un drapier de Delft, entreprend la fabrication d’objectifs en verre, ceci pour mieux étudier la qualité de son textile. Il fond, coule et moud de petites perles de verre. Ses petits objectifs sont si lumineux et agrandissent tellement, que le drapier a le sentiment d’entrer dans une nouvelle dimension. Est-il le premier à voir de petits animaux se mouvoir à l’intérieur d’une goutte d’eau ? Comment décrire quelque chose que personne n’a vu auparavant ? Dans le film Toute larme, Sarah Vanagt mène une exploration dans la ville de Bruxelles où elle réside, ceci à l’aide du microscope de Leeuwenhoek. Elle ramasse ce qu’elle trouve sur son chemin, et essaie de s’imaginer ce à quoi ont dû ressembler les premières images au microscope. Elle remplace l’objectif de sa caméra par l’objectif du 17e siècle. Tout en filmant, elle se demande pourquoi nous recherchons toujours des formes que nous connaissons déjà lorsque notre œil est confronté à l’inconnu.
• In de 17de eeuw begint Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek, een stoffenhandelaar uit Delft, lenzen te maken om de kwaliteit van zijn stoffen beter te kunnen bestuderen. Hij smelt, druppelt en slijpt glazen bolletjes. Die piepkleine lenzen zijn zo helder en hebben zo een vergrotende kracht dat de stoffenhandelaar een nieuwe dimensie lijkt te betreden. Is hij de eerste die kleine “diertgens” ziet bewegen in een druppel water? Welke worden te gebruiken om iets te beschrijven dat niemand anders ooit eerder zag? In Alle de tranen wandelt Sarah Vanagt door haar thuisstad Brussel met Leeuwenhoeks microscoop in de hand. Wat ze op haar pad tegenkomt, raapt ze op. Zo probeert ze te achterhalen hoe de allereerste microscopische beelden er misschien uit hebben gezien. Ze vervangt de lens van haar camera door de 17de-eeuwse lens van Van Leeuwenhoek. Tijdens het filmen vraagt ze zich af waarom we steeds opnieuw op zoek gaan naar vormen die we al kennen, telkens we oog in oog staan met het onbekende.
