synopsis

Frans Masereel is one of the most fascinating Belgian artists of the 20th century. His work, essentially composed of black and white engravings, is a cry of rebellion against the tragedies of his time. Forced into exile for his pacifist convictions, he embodied - alongside writers like Stefan Zweig and Romain Rolland - the dream of a cultural and brotherly Europe. Through an imaginary correspondence addressed to the artist, the film sketches the portrait of a man who, throughout his life, attempted to break free of art dealers and put his creations in the hands of all.
Frans Masereel est l’une des figures artistiques belges les plus passionnantes du 20è siècle. Son œuvre, essentiellement composée de gravures en noir et blanc, est un cri de révolte contre les tragédies de son temps. Contraint à un exil forcé en raison de ses convictions pacifistes, il incarna aux côtés d’écrivains comme Stefan Zweig et Romain Rolland, le rêve d’une Europe culturelle et fraternelle. A travers une correspondance imaginaire que le réalisateur adresse à l’artiste, le film esquisse le portrait d’un homme libre et émouvant, qui durant toute sa vie, a tenté de s’affranchir des marchands d’Art pour mettre sa création entre toutes les mains.
Frans Masereel is een van de boeiendste Belgische kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw. Zijn werk, dat grotendeels bestaat uit houtsneden in zwart-wit, is een kreet van opstandigheid tegen de tragedies van zijn tijd. Vanwege zijn pacifistische overtuiging moest hij in ballingschap gaan. Samen met schrijvers als Stefan Zweig en Romain Rolland stond hij voor de droom van een cultureel en broederlijk Europa. Via een denkbeeldige correspondentie met de kunstenaar schetst de regisseur een portret van een onafhankelijk en aangrijpend man die zich gedurende zijn hele leven trachtte te onttrekken aan de kunsthandelaars en zijn werk tot publiek bezit wilde maken.
