synopsis

Hugo Claus rewrote and directed Friday as the cinematic version of his original 1969 play of the same name. Just as in the play, the story begins with the theme of incest, as the father Georges returns from serving his jail sentence for that crime. When Georges gets home he finds out that his wife Jeanne has had an illegitimate child by a younger man, Erik , and now both of them must somehow try to return to a normal life, given their only too obvious lapses in moral judgment. As the husband and wife try hard to accommodate each other's failings and start to get to know each other again, Erik comes back into the picture. Now the three of them must resolve the deep-seated conflicts that brought them to this emotionally-wrought juncture of love and betrayal.
Hugo Claus a réécrit et réalisé Friday comme une adaptation au cinéma de sa pièce originale du même nom, créée en 1969. Tout comme dans la pièce, l’histoire commence avec le même thème de l’inceste, lorsque Georges revient après avoir purgé sa peine de prison pour son crime. Lorsqu’il rentre à la maison, il découvre que Jeanne, sa femme, a eu un enfant illégitime avec Erik, un homme plus jeune. Ils doivent tous les deux essayer de retrouver une vie normale, vu leur manque évident de jugement moral. Alors que l’homme et la femme essaient péniblement de s’adapter aux échecs de l’autre et commencent à se connaître à nouveau tous les deux, Erik réapparaît. Tous les trois doivent maintenant résoudre les conflits profonds qui les ont menés vers ces moments émotionnellement impétueux d’amour et de trahison.
