synopsis

It is 1943, and Franco has blocked the path over the Pyrenees to Spain for Jews fleeing Nazi oppression in France and beyond. At the border crossing in a small village, Manel Grau, a civil servant with a Republican past, decides to go against the orders of his superiors and help the Jews across the border. He does this with the help of Juliana, a fellow inhabitant of the village, and Jérôme, a French smuggler. Between them, they start a campaign to help as many Jews as they possibly can. It is then that Manel finds himself on a dangerous path that will awaken in him and his wife Mercé ghosts of the still-recent Spanish Civil War.
1943. Franco bloque l’accès des Juifs qui fuient l’oppression nazie à travers la chaîne des Pyrénées. Dans un petit village situé à cheval sur la frontière, Manel Grau, un fonctionnaire au passé de républicain, décide d’aller à l’encontre des ordres de ses supérieurs et d’aider des Juifs à franchir la frontière avec le concours de Juliana, qui habite le même village, et de Jérôme, un passeur français. Commence alors pour eux une croisade qui les amènera à aider le plus grand nombre de Juifs possible. Manel se retrouve dès lors entraîné dans une dangereuse odyssée qui réveillera en lui et en sa femme, Mercé, les vieux fantômes de la guerre civile espagnole, encore toute récente.
1943. Franco heeft de vluchtroute geblokkeerd die over de Pyreneeën loopt en die de Joden gebruiken om aan de nazivervolging te ontsnappen. In een klein dorp bij de grensovergang beslist Manel Grau, een ambtenaar met een republikeins verleden, om de bevelen van zijn meerderen te negeren en de Joden te helpen om de grens over te steken. Hij krijgt de hulp van Juliana, een dorpsgenote, en van Jerôme, een Franse smokkelaar. Ze beginnen samen een kruistocht om zo veel mogelijk Joden te helpen. Voor Manel wordt het een gevaarlijke odyssee. Die brengt bij hem en zijn vrouw Mercé oude spoken weer tot leven van de pas geëindigde Spaanse Burgeroorlog.
