synopsis

Set in Indonesia, Going Home is the story of a friendship between two boys who grow up together, Johan (son of a Dutch plantation owner) and Oeroeg (son of a foreman). In the days following World War II, Indonesian nationalists wage an armed struggle against the Dutch colonial authorities. Johan, now a 24-year-old soldier, is assigned to restore authority in Indonesia. On his arrival at the plantation, Johan discovers the body of his father, brutally slain by Indonesian freedom fighters. Briefly, Johan sees the face of the murderer and recognizes his old friend Oeroeg. Johan and Oeroeg find themselves on opposite sides of a battle where there can be no victors.
Tourné en Indonésie, Going Home est l’histoire d’une amitié entre deux garçons qui ont grandi ensemble, Johan (fils d’un propriétaire terrien néerlandais) et Oeroeg (fils d’un résident). Les jours suivant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les nationalistes indonésiens entament un combat armé contre les autorités coloniales néerlandaises. Johan, devenu soldat et aujourd’hui âgé de 24 ans, reçoit la tâche de restaurer l’autorité en Indonésie. Dès son arrivée dans la plantation, Johan découvre le corps de son père, tué brutalement par les combattants pour la liberté indonésiens. Johan entrevoit brièvement le visage du meurtrier et reconnaît son vieil ami Oeroeg. Johan et Oeroeg se trouvent dans les camps opposés d’une bataille dans laquelle il ne peut y avoir de vainqueurs.
