synopsis

If the shamans stop dancing and life in the rainforest loses its balance, the sky will fall and crush everything beneath it. This wisdom is passed on in the Brazilian Amazon by every generation of Yanomami. But gold diggers pollute the rivers, shamans die, the rainforest perishes and the earth warms up. Davi Kopenawa, shaman, chief and well-known spokesperson for the Yanomami, has been fighting these threats for more than 40 years. Time and again, he travels the world defending his people against an endless colonisation. Do the Whites understand that the fall from the sky will not only crush the Yanomami?
Davi Kopenawa, porte-parole célèbre de la lutte des Yanomami du Brésil, combat la colonisation depuis les années 70. Alors que le territoire Yanomami était démarqué depuis les années 90, l’habitat des peuples amazoniens est aujourd’hui menacé plus que jamais. Le chaman doit une fois de plus parcourir le monde pour sensibiliser les peuples occidentaux de la fatalité inéluctable à laquelle mènera leur mode de vie: l’effondrement du ciel, dont les Yanomami préservent l’équilibre depuis des millénaires. HOLDING UP THE SKY nous entraîne aux côtés de ce passeur, dans les cieux et la forêt qui protègent son peuple, et dans les lieux qui les menacent.
'Als de sjamanen stoppen met dansen en het leven in het regenwoud haar evenwicht verliest, zal de hemel naar beneden vallen en alles verpletteren.’ Die wijsheid wordt door de Yanomami in Brazilië van generatie op generatie doorgegeven. Maar goudzoekers vervuilen de rivieren, de sjamanen sterven, het regenwoud verdwijnt en de aarde warmt op. Davi Kopenawa, stamhoofd en woordvoerder van de Yanomami, vecht al 40 jaar zonder ophouden tegen de kolonisatie van zijn land. Hij waarschuwt de westerlingen dat wanneer de hemel neervalt, ook zij zullen verpletterd worden. Waarom luisteren ze niet?
