synopsis

In the 1960s, a boy went to mass with his parents and threw up. Looking back, the boy - now an adult filmmaker - talks to three former priests and a woman, all of whom consider the question of the role of the Church and give pride of place to the question of faith.
Dans les années soixante, un petit garçon assiste à la messe avec ses parents. Alors que les gens communient, l’enfant se met à vomir. Que rejette-t-il ainsi ?
Aujourd’hui devenu cinéaste, il s’interroge sur cet événement. Pour ce faire, il part à la rencontre de trois prêtres qui ont choisi - ou ont été contraints - de se couper de l’Eglise. Ils ont cru que le mot religion signifiait « se relier » ou « amour », ils ont cru que l’Eglise était avant tout compassion et ils ont cru que cette institution était au service de la spiritualité. Mais ils ont rencontré autre chose jusqu’à même l’exclusion.
Pour garder leur foi, ils ont dû quitter l’Eglise. Ces trois pécheurs n’en restent pas moins engagés – mais ils ne se sont jamais agenouillés pour demander pardon.
Puis un quatrième témoignage d’une femme, Kristin Vanschoubroek. Elle n’a jamais été rejetée, puisque l’Eglise n’a jamais voulu d’elle. Elle stigmatise cette inégalité fondamentale, et nous rappelle qu’à côté du Père, du Fils et du Saint Esprit, il y a aussi la mère et la fille.
Le film, par sa sincérité et par la place qu’il accorde à la foi et au sentiment religieux, remet l’Eglise au milieu des hommes, comme il se doit et comme elle l’a depuis longtemps oublié. Trois anciens prêtres, Adolf Holl, un Autrichien, Horst Herrmann un Allemand et Luc Hessel, un Belge, répondent sans détour ni fausse pudeur aux interrogations du réalisateur.
Eind jaren zestig. Een kleine jongen gaat samen met zijn ouders naar de mis. Tijdens de communie, geeft het kind over. De jongen is nu een filmmaker en onderzoekt wat hem toen zo beroerde. Daarvoor ontmoet hij drie priesters, die – verplicht of uit eigen beweging – nu buiten de kerk staan. Ze waren ervan overtuigd dat het woord “religie”, “verbinding” of “liefde” betekende en dat het vooral om mededogen ging. Maar ze ontdekten iets anders.
Om hun geloof te behouden, hebben zij de Kerk moeten verlaten.Toch bleven onze zondaars immer trouw aan hun engagement. Er is ook een vierde getuige: Kristin Vanschoubroek, een vrouw. De kerk heeft haar nooit kunnen verwerpen, omdat ze haar nooit had aanvaard. Ze hekelt deze fundamentele ongelijkheid en herinnert ons eraan dat er naast de Vader, de Zoon en de Heilige Geest ook nog de moeder en dochter is.
De drie ex-priesters, Adolf Holl, een Oostenrijker, Horst Herrmann, een Duitser en Luc Hessel, een Belg, en onze vrouwelijke getuige antwoorden in alle eerlijkheid op de filmmakers vragen.
