With the publication of the Ophthalmographia in 1632, the Amsterdam physician Vopiscus Fortunatus Plempius shed new light on the age-old question of how seeing works. His answer was an invitation to experiment, using the eye of a freshly slaughtered cow.

synopsis

In the short film In Waking Hours we see historian Katrien Vanagt - who studied the Latin writings of Plempius - cloaked in the skin of one of his 21st-century disciples. Her cousin, filmmaker Sarah Vanagt, captures how this modern 'Plempia' meticulously follows her teacher's instructions. Thus, in a dark kitchen in Brussels, they become witnesses at the birth of images upon the eye.
Met de publicatie van de Ophthalmographia in 1632 gooit de Amsterdamse arts Vopiscus Fortunatus Plempius een origineel antwoord in de eeuwenoude strijd om de vraag hoe het zien werkt. Zijn antwoord is een uitnodiging om te experimenteren: 'Betreed samen met mij een donkere kamer en prepareer er het oog van een vers geslachte koe.' Hij benadrukt dat om het even wie dit experiment thuis kan uitvoeren 'mits geringe moeite en zonder kost'. 'En jij, staande in de verduisterde kamer, achter het oog, zult een schilderij zien dat perfect alle objecten uit de buitenwereld voorstelt', belooft Plempius.

In de korte film In Waking Hours kruipt historica Katrien Vanagt - die de Latijnse geschriften van Plempius bestudeerde - in de huid van een 21e-eeuwse discipel van Plempius. Haar nicht, cineaste Sarah Vanagt, is erbij en filmt hoe deze moderne 'Plempia' de instructies van haar leermeester nauwgezet volgt. Zo maken ze in een donkere keuken in Brussel de geboorte van beelden in levende lijve mee.
