Bypassing political propaganda and combining elements from documentary, fiction and animation, this road movie sheds a poetic light on highly topical questions in a world that is on fire: what is home? What makes a country?

synopsis

Every country has a national myth, often featuring a legendary king, warrior or martyr who battles for his homeland. These myths play an essential role in the creation of national identity. Featuring various heroes of flesh and blood, Little Man, Time and the Troubadour forms an alternative national myth for small and unrecognized Abkhazia.Born in Abkhazia and raised in Soviet Georgia, Sipa Labakhua had to flee with his family to Moscow when the USSR collapsed and war broke out in the early 90's. Years after his untimely return to his war-ridden birthplace, Sipa takes to the road with his autobiographical one-man marionette show. While provoking audiences with his own history of displacement and war, he collects the personal memories and dreams of people from different backgrounds: Abkhazian nationalists, Orthodox priests, Syrian refugees, Georgian farmers and Russian hippies.
De troubadour uit de titel, dat is kunstenaar Sipa Labakhua, die met zijn autobiografische poppentheatervoorstelling rondreist door zijn geboorteland Abchazië. Het soms surrealistisch ogende stuk is gebaseerd op de lotgevallen van zijn vader, zijn held. Hij was een politicus vol idealen die door de oorlog met Georgië met zijn gezin naar Moskou vluchtte, maar daar niet kon aarden. Nu is de zoon teruggekeerd. Hij deelt zijn zorgen met het publiek en ontmoet inwoners uit de streek. Gedreven door de vragen "Wat is een land? Wat is thuis?", verzamelt hij herinneringen en bespiegelingen van een bont gezelschap – van nationalistische Abchaziërs tot immigranten en kunstenaars.
Labakhua ontwikkelde het libretto voor zijn voorstelling samen met regisseur Ineke Smits, die niet voor het eerst haar liefde voor de regio toont. De voorstelling werd het vertrekpunt voor een poëtische roadmovie met zang en verbeelding, nostalgie en verwondering. "Kijk, we praten. We gaan vooruit", meent iemand na het marionettenspel.
