Marcel is a collective formed to make a a docu-drama about the factual and fictional associations between three celebrated artists who gravitated around the surrealist movement in Belgium and France: Marcel Duchamp, Marcel Mariën and Marcel Broodthaers. The film takes as its point of departure a re-interpretation of Mariën's controversial L'imitation du cinéma (1959), itself a satire of the book 'The Imitation of Christ' (Thomas Kemper, 1424). Playing on its intentionally out-dated aesthetic, Marcel approaches the past in a similar way as Mariën, who based his film on a book from the Middle Ages to critique surrealism and bourgeois Christian society.
Marcel est un collectif formé pour faire un film du même nom. Un docudrame sur les associations réelles et fictives entre trois artistes reconnus qui ont gravité autour du mouvement surréaliste en Belgique et en France : Marcel Duchamp, Marcel Mariën et Marcel Broodthaers. Une mise en scène rocambolesque, des décors hallucinatoires et des collages spatio-temporels permettent la réapparition de ces esprits du Surréalisme. Marcel prend comme point de départ une réinterprétation du film controversé de Marcel Mariën L’imitation du cinéma (The Imitation of Cinéma) (1959), lui-même une satire du livre « The Imitation of Christ » (Thomas Kemper, 1424). En jouant sur l’esthétique volontairement démodée de ce film historique, Marcel approche le passé d’une façon similaire à celle de Mariën qui s’inspira pour son film d’un livre du Moyen Age pour critiquer le surréalisme et la société bourgeoise chrétienne.
