synopsis

After the publication of his notebooks, a great many of his letters and a monumental catalogue of his work by David Sylvester, René Magritte is now one of the 20th century's best documented artists. After an initial period, in which his work was characterised by menace and fear, Magritte developed his well-known visual vocabulary. He became famous during his lifetime. This documentary includes the material Magritte shot himself with his own film camera. Some of his short films are little stories featuring his wife Georgette and his old surrealist friends Scutenaire and Irène Hamoir, Mesens and Colinet. The majority of Magritte's film material has never been shown publicly before.
Après la publication de ses cahiers, une grande partie de ses lettres et un catalogue monumental sur ses œuvres par David Sylvester, René Magritte est désormais l’un des artistes du 20ème siècle les mieux documentés. Après une première période, dans laquelle ses œuvres étaient caractérisées par la menace et la peur, Magritte développa son vocabulaire visuel bien connu. Il devint célèbre au cours de sa vie. Ce documentaire inclut les scènes que Magritte a filmé lui-même avec sa propre caméra. Certains de ses films sont de petites histoires mettant en scène sa femme Georgette et ses vieux amis surréalistes Scutenaire, Irène Hamoir, Mesens et Colinet. La majorité des films de Magritte n’ont jamais été montrés publiquement auparavant.
