Guided by a sentence from her childhood, director Juliette Joffé encounters three people in Paris: a collector of lost objects, a princess in Disneyland, and a coffee seller. Next Year, We Will Leave is an attempt at reconciliation with her hometown, through a dialogue with strangers. Through a mirroring effect, the first-person narrative echoes the stories of those filmed, questioning the possibilities of the documentary encounter.
Geleid door een zin uit haar kindertijd ontmoet de regisseur in haar geboortestad Parijs drie mensen: een verzamelaar van verloren voorwerpen, een prinses in Disneyland en een verkoper. L’année prochaine, on partira is een verzoening met haar geboorteplaats door middel van een dialoog met vreemden. Het eigen verhaal wordt weerspiegeld in de verhalen van diegene die gefilmd worden. De mogelijkheden van ontmoetingen binnen een documentaire worden onderzocht.
