synopsis

Ours is a Country of Words is filmed in Shatila, a refugee camp built in Lebanon when thousands of Palestinians fled their country in 1948. The story begins at an undetermined moment in the future, when the dream of the Palestinian refugees to go back to Palestine becomes reality. The film treads a thin line between fiction and documentary, dream and reality. Families prepare for their fictional return, while it slowly becomes clear that this dream is far removed from their daily life in the camp. Through the words they use as actors to talk about the dream of returning to their homeland, we can understand more deeply what it means to them to live in exile.
Ours is a Country of Words werd gefilmd in Shatila, een vluchtelingenkamp dat werd gebouwd toen duizenden Palestijnen hun land ontvluchtten in 1948. Het verhaal begint op een onbepaald tijdstip in de toekomst, wanneer de droom van de Palestijnse vluchtelingen om terug te keren naar Palestina werkelijkheid wordt. De film balanceert op de dunne lijn tussen fictie en documentaire, tussen droom en realiteit. Families bereiden zich voor op de fictieve terugkeer, maar langzaam wordt het duidelijk dat die droom veraf ligt van hun dagelijks leven in het kamp. Via de woorden die de acteurs gebruiken om over hun droom van de terugkeer te praten, begrijpen we beter wat het voor hen betekent om in ballingschap te leven.
