The story of the NP-21 projektor (the 'Projector of the People') during which the directors dismantled and rebuilt a new, functioning projector while filming the entire process.

synopsis

In Yugoslavia after the end of World War II, a new major importance was conferred on the role of cinema by the Tito regime: over a very short time, hundreds of new cinemas were built and Europe's largest film studio was founded in Belgrade and Slovenia's Iskra, beginning the mass manufacture of 35mm film projectors. The most legendary of these would be the NP-21 (the 'Projector of the People'). For Projektor, an NP-21 is completely dismantled. A mould is made of each separate part, which is subsequently cast and finished in bronze then reassembled into a new, functioning and monumental projector. Dusica Drazic and Wim Janssen filmed the entire process, registering the beauty of the original craftsmanship at the foundry and the material similarities between the bronze and the reel of film.
Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd in het Joegoslavië van Tito een groot belang toegewezen aan de cinema. Honderden nieuwe bioscopen werden in een sneltempo opgericht, in Belgrado werd de grootste filmstudio van Europa geopend en in Slovenië kreeg de firma Iskra de opdracht om massaal 35mm-filmprojectoren te produceren. De meest legendarische uit de reeks projectoren was de NP-21. NP staat voor ‘Narodni Projektor’ of ‘Projector van het Volk’. Voor Projektor werd een NP-21 volledig gedemonteerd. Van elk onderdeel werd een mal gemaakt om deze vervolgens af te gieten in brons en terug samen te brengen in een nieuwe, werkende en monumentale projector. Drazic en Janssen filmden het integrale proces en registreerden de schoonheid van traditionele ambacht in de smederij en de materiële overeenkomsten tussen brons en pellicule. De vaststelling dat een projector het proces van zijn eigen ontstaan toont, reikt verder dan een puur conceptueel statement. Dit project is tegelijk een ode aan handwerk en hoe het in de loop van de twintigste eeuw veranderde.
