A cache of militant films, dubbed into Japanese, reflects the struggle for Palestinian self-determination.

synopsis

The growing struggle for Palestinian self-determination between 1960 and 1980 was supported by left-wing movements worldwide, including in Japan. This is illustrated by a collection of 16mm films by militant filmmakers from various countries, which were dubbed so that they could be screened in Japan. Their Japanese audiences felt oppressed by the US after World War II, and not only sympathized but also identified with the Palestinians. R21 aka Restoring Solidarity acts as an inventory, using film as a time machine, in the form of a montage essay.
De groeiende strijd voor Palestijnse zelfbeschikking tussen 1960 en 80 werd wereldwijd gesteund door linkse bewegingen, ook in Japan. Dit wordt geïllustreerd door een collectie 16mm films van militante filmmakers uit verschillende landen, die werden nagesynchroniseerd en vertoond in Japan. Hun Japanse publiek voelde zich onderdrukt door de VS na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en sympathiseerde niet alleen met de Palestijnen, maar identificeerde zich ook met hen. R21 aka Restoring Solidarity fungeert als een inventaris, waarbij het medium film wordt gebruikt als een tijdmachine in de vorm van een montage-essay.
