synopsis

Lust and jealousy blossom as Cécile, a regal and mysterious young African traveller, comes to live at the home of Fanny, an awkward white teenager sequestered in a bubble of wealth. In a lush, ruthless environment that evokes both the pre-Civil War South and postcolonial Western Europe, Cécile falls in love with Rufus, the gardener’s son, igniting Fanny’s own turbulent sexual awakening. As both girls realise that the world they inhabit is not what it appears, they band together to outsmart a domestic and state system of cruelty that is meant to keep them in line.
Lust en jaloezie bloeien op wanneer Cécile, een jonge Afrikaanse reizigster, aankomt in het huis van Fanny, een onhandig meisje dat afgezonderd leeft in een bubbel van rijkdom. In een weelderige en meedogenloze omgeving die een beladen historisch landschap oproept, wordt Cécile verliefd op Rufus, de zoon van de tuinman, wat Fanny’s eigen turbulente seksuele ontwaking aanwakkert.
