Two teenage girls, a debutante and a refugee, are plunged into a psychosexual tug-of-war in an alternate universe that echoes the Deep South.

synopsis

Lust and jealousy blossom as Cécile, a regal and mysterious young African traveller, comes to live at the home of Fanny, an awkward white teenager sequestered in a bubble of wealth. In a lush, ruthless environment that evokes both the pre-Civil War South and postcolonial Western Europe, Cécile falls in love with Rufus, the gardener’s son, igniting Fanny’s own turbulent sexual awakening. As both girls realize that the world they inhabit is not what it appears, they band together to outsmart a domestic and state system of cruelty that is meant to keep them in line.
